TORONTO, Aug. 27 /CNW/ - Earlier today, I was asked by Premier Ernie Eves to co-ordinate, on behalf of the Government of Ontario, an investigation into issues arising from the recall of beef from Aylmer Meat Packers Inc. of Aylmer, Ontario. As part of this undertaking, I asked about the extent of all meat produced at this facility. While there is no evidence that the extent of the problem extended beyond beef, this facility also slaughters lamb, veal and pork. Let me stress that there is no reason to believe there is a health risk with other meat, but we are advising consumers not to eat any products from this company. We will continue working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to determine whether any further precautionary steps are necessary. I would like to assure the public that while less than one per cent of Ontario's meat supply is processed at Aylmer Meat Packers Inc., we will do everything possible to continue to share with consumers all available information on all meats processed at the plant. The investigation continues. Please check the Canadian Food Inspection Agency web site at www.inspection.gc.ca for frequent updates on retail outlets and further information on the recall as it becomes available.
