Investing In New Equipment For Community Health Centres To Benefit
Ontarians
TORONTO, Feb. 15 /CNW/ - The McGuinty government is improving community-
based health care by investing in new and upgraded diagnostic medical
equipment for Ontario's Community Health Centres (CHCs), Health and Long-Term
Care Minister George Smitherman announced today.
"We are delivering the highest quality health care to Ontarians, not only
in our hospitals but also at the community level," said Smitherman. "Investing
in modern, upgraded equipment for CHCs will help ensure that Ontarians have
access to quality care in the most appropriate setting."
The $1.6 million investment will provide 49 CHCs across Ontario with new
medical equipment such as examination tables, electrocardiograms and
defibrillators.
Community Health Centres provide primary health care to families,
individuals and communities. Today's investment in new diagnostic medical
equipment builds on a $21 million investment announced last fall to expand and
enhance existing CHCs, to open 10 new satellites and to fund care for the
homeless.
"This investment will help equip Ontario's Community Health Centres with
the medical diagnostic and treatment equipment we need to continue offering
quality health services to our clients," said Denise Brooks, President of the
Association of Ontario Health Centres.
In the past two weeks, the McGuinty government has invested more than
$120 million to upgrade and replace MRI/CT, cardiac diagnostic and cancer
radiation equipment, as well as $340 million for new and upgraded equipment
like patient lifts and X-rays. Taken together, these form the largest single
investment in medical and diagnostic equipment ever in Canada.
Today's announcement is part of the McGuinty government's comprehensive
plan to improve health care in Ontario. It's a plan that includes reducing
wait times for key procedures, creating Family Health Teams, increasing the
number of doctors and nurses, and investing heavily in community-based health
care in order to ease the pressure on hospitals and deliver care where
patients need it most - closer to home.
