Making Ontario schools safer places to learn

McGuinty Government Launches Public Consultations On The Safe Schools
    Act

TORONTO, Nov. 8 /CNW/ - Students, parents, educators and communities
across the province are invited to provide their input on school safety and
the Safe Schools Act through public consultations starting this month,
Education Minister Gerard Kennedy said today.
The McGuinty government's Safe Schools Action Team will visit communities
across Ontario to examine school safety and the impact of the Safe Schools Act
as part of a complete review of the act. A discussion paper will be used as
part of the consultations and be released on the ministry website prior to the
first consultation date.

The consultations will take place in:

Ottawa, November 21 Toronto (East), December 1
London, November 23 Sudbury, December 5
Toronto (West), November 29 Thunder Bay, December 7

The Safe Schools Act was introduced in 2000 by the previous government.
At that time, it was determined that a review of the act would take place
after five years of implementation. The McGuinty government committed to the
review of the safe schools act as part of an overall safe schools action plan.
This includes the recently announced elementary school safe welcome program
and security access devices, bullying prevention programs for every school in
the province, an anti-bullying hotline and a review of Justice Robins report.
More information on the consultations, registration and the discussion
paper will be available on the government's website at www.edu.gov.on.ca prior
to the first consultation date.
Liz Sandals, Parliamentary Assistant to Minister of Community Safety and
Correctional Services Monte Kwinter, is leading the action team of safety
experts who are implementing the Safe School Action plan.
