Ottawa-Area Commuter Route To Get Major Overhaul


    McGuinty Government To Keep People And Goods Moving

    TORONTO, April 18 /CNW/ -

    Construction work is planned for Highway 7 from Jinkinson Road to Ashton
Station Road in Ottawa and the Township of Beckwith to improve road safety,
reduce congestion and promote carpooling.

    Work includes:

    -   Widening Highway 7 from two to four lanes
    -   Adding a new carpool lot at the Dwyer Hill Road interchange area
    -   Building four new bridges at: Dwyer Hill Road, Ashton Station Road,
        TransCanada Trail Crossing and the North Service Road crossing of
        Lavallee Creek
    -   Adding new interchanges at Upper Dwyer Hill Road and Ashton Station
        Road
    -   Constructing new service roads on both the north and south side of
        Highway 7.

    The $73.2-million construction contract was awarded to Bot Construction
Limited of Oakville and should be complete by late fall 2010. Construction
will be completed in stages to minimize disruption to drivers. Two lanes of
traffic will be maintained along Highway 7 for most of the work. On occasion,
there will be nighttime, single-lane reductions required. Dwyer Hill Road will
be closed for two weeks. Signs will be posted in advance to prepare drivers
for closures and detours along county roads.

    -   More than 17,000 commuters and tourists and 1,200 trucks use this
        highway daily. Head-on and intersection collisions will be reduced
        with the new four-lane highway and interchanges.

    -   A new $400-million Municipal Roads and Bridges Fund is helping
        municipalities invest in critical projects across the province.
        Funding is being distributed to municipalities outside Toronto, based
        on their share of Ontario's road network in relation to population.

    -   Since 2003, the McGuinty government has committed $9.3 billion in
        highways, roads and bridges and invested $6.2 billion in public
        transit.
