McGuinty Government Provides $33,000 For Bus System TORONTO, June 26 /CNW/ - NEWS Parry Sound's bus service is getting a $33,150 boost from the Ontario government. The funds will mean the town can expand bus service for residents with disabilities. The Town began offering bus service in summer 2007, becoming one of 110 municipalities to receive provincial gas tax funding for public transit. Ontario shares two cents per litre from gas tax revenues with municipalities for public transit. Since 2004, the government has provided municipalities with more than $1 billion in gas tax funding, including more than $314 million this year. QUOTES "In towns such as Parry Sound, public transit is not just a greener option - it is a lifeline for seniors and people with disabilities. Our investments in public transit are improving access for residents," said Minister of Transportation Jim Bradley. "With our high seniors population, public transit is a very significant issue for Parry Sound. The provincial gas tax funding means we'll be able to improve our specialized transit service for people who use wheelchairs to get around," said Parry Sound Mayor Richard Adams. << QUICK FACTS - By 2010, Ontario will have provided municipalities with $1.6 billion in gas tax funding for public transit. - One bus takes 40 vehicles off the road and keeps 25 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions out of the atmosphere each year.
