McGuinty Government Building Better Highways For Ontarians

An innovative and environment-friendly construction technique will be
used to rebuild and repair Highway 58 in Thorold this summer.

Work includes:
- Reconstructing Highway 58 from Highway 20 to Thorold Stone Road for
4.3 kilometres by using a construction technique called "rubblizing"
that crushes and reuses the existing concrete pavement. This
technique helps protect the environment because it recycles existing
materials, minimizes hauling away the old concrete pavement and
reduces the need for new road building materials.
- Repaving Highway 20 from Highway 58 to Niagara Regional Road 70 for
1.9 kilometres
- Adding turning lanes and new traffic signals at the Highway 58 and
Beaverdams Road and Highway 58 and Allanburg Road intersections

The $5.8-million construction contract was awarded to Rankin Construction
Incorporated of St. Catharines and should be complete by October 2008. To
minimize driver inconvenience, construction will be completed in stages.
During construction, traffic on Highway 58 will be detoured to other local
roads. Highway 20 will be reduced to a single lane during non-peak hours.
Signs will be posted in advance to notify drivers of closures and detour
routes.
